You've heard about it. you may even have read about it.
Now you have an opportunity to learn about it Dr. Bill Torch—in person, not the virtual Bill Torch— will show a
video and explain his invention at the March 2003 meeting of NIA, March 22 from 9 a.m. to noon in room 101 at Washoe
Medical Center.
You may only think it's an innovation...
Air cushioning hit the sports-shoe scene big time in the late 20th Century. it padded the shoes and the prices,
and became the status symbol for every adolescent boy in the U.S.
The Nike model came pre-inflated, but the Reebok model allowed the owner to custom inflate the footwear. Original,
huh?
Apparently not. An article in the March 1920 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine featured a cut-away view of a
shoe with a pneumatic insole. The wearer pumped air into the rubber bladder through a valve, after lacing up the
shoe.
The manufacturer of the 1920s model was B. A. Spinney Company of Des Moines, lowa. There doesn't seem to be any
word about the kinds of jumps they allowed.
Houston group proposes nationwide showcase
In an effort to showcase the work of inventors throughout the country, the Houston Inventors Association is inviting
the country's approximately 58 inventors associations to join a nationwide exposition on Saturday, August 9, 2003.
Local associations are to arrange for a meeting space to accommodate display tables and booths for members and
other local inventors to show their inventions. Opening and closing times will be coordinated to allow as much
common open time as possible across the 4 time zones.
Local-nationwide links
Each local association will provide a link for every participant on the web page of the Houston Inventors Association.
This link will list the location of the local inventors show and by category of invention.
Computers at each show location will allow show visitors across the country to Iearn about the inventions being
exhibited at the other shows as well as their local event. If the inventor has a cell phone, that number will be
prominently featured on the appropriate web page, and potential customers can make immediate contact
The UIA feels that this is a wonderful event to be held during "National Inventors Monthly in August. We encourage
all groups across the nation to participate in this original and promising concept."
Media exposure provided
For participants, UIA will post the date and location of local events on various wetsites to gain maximum exposure.
The schedule will also be provided to the media and professional organizations. All inventors participating in
their group's show will be offered a free posting of their product to the "UIA New Products" listing
on the UIA website for the month of August.

Bullets'n blurbs from all around
Input invited
I have been asked to speak at the annual conference of the Patent and Trademark Depository Library. I want to give
the audience a picture of how inventors use the PTDL and how the Internet has changed that use . I'm looking for
specific examples of how the PTDL helps inventors as well as how they could be more valuable.
Thanks for whatever information you can give me. In your response, please let me know if I may quote you in my
speech. so, please give me your title and group's name. Contact: Joanne Hayes-Rines, Publisher, Inventors' Digest

Fee diversion to phase out
"To support technology innovation and provide for intellectual property protection, the Department of Commerce
is working to eliminate the practice of using USPTO revenues for unrelated federal programs. Making more fees available
sooner will enable the agency to increase the quality of patents and trademarks issued," according to Commerce
Secretary Don Evans.
The Secretary's comments come as USPTO begins its transformation to a quality-driven, cost-effective organization
under the provisions of the agency's 21st Century Strategic Plan. The USPTO is aggressively moving toward end-to-end
electronic processing of patents in 2004, and is now working with the European and Japanese Patent Offices to end
duplication of effort by sharing prior art searches.
"The President has already reduced the annual practice of 'fee diversion' by 50 percent in the Administration's
fiscal year 2004 Budget," noted Under Secretary James E. Rogan. "Secretary Evans is also committed to
working toward ending fee diversion entirely. This bold step is another manifestation of the Administration's commitment
to strengthen the economy by ensuring that the USPTO continues to lead the world in producing the most timely and
reliable intellectual property rights protection for American innovators."
