Lemelson Young Inventor Scholarship Awarded for Paint Can Invention.

Excepted from the Reno Gazette Journal By
Janice Hoke Wednesday May 23rd, 2001
Christopher J. Yocom , Sparks High School senior won a $100,000 college scholarship for paint can invention. Yocom, 18, was awarded the first-ever Lemelson Young Inventor Scholarship on Tuesday for his invention of a new type of paint can lid that allows paint to drip back into the can while maintaining an air-tight seal. "The average everyday Joe can save paint to do touch-ups around the home," Yocom explained. The Lemelson scholarship provides $100,000 to support a Washoe County student inventor and innovator while attending an accredited United States college or university. Yocom said he plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno for a year or two and possibly to transfer to a technical college. The four-year scholarship of $25,000 per year comes from the Lemelson Education and Assistance Program, begun by Dorothy Lemelson of Incline Village. Geyer and several other area teachers learned about entrepreneurial inventions and how students could apply for the scholarship in a summer class taught by John Kleppe, a University of Nevada, Reno professor and friend of Jerome Lemelson. Most of the seven applications came from students of those teachers. Applicants had to submit an idea that would have a commercial application and had to conduct a patent search. "The hardest part is the idea," Geyer said. "Putting the rest together is more time-consuming. The patent search is the most complicated of all." "(Yocom) had done his homework," said George Ochs, the school district science coordinator who served on the selection committee. "He did his research and then stepped back to reassess the problem." Inventors think differently than pure scientists, Ochs said. "They think in an innovative and creative fashion, not just theory and concepts. "He was obviously seeing the picture in his mind and could draw it."
