August is National Inventors' Month! Contact your local
libraries. They may request free display materials. Kit includes a
banner, 5 1l" x 17" posters, stickers and bookmarks for kids. All they
have to do is go to www.inventorsdigest.com and click on
National Inventors' Month. You can conduct local seminars. This
is the time to promote the image of the independent inventor.
The Ananda Lewis Show is looking for young girls who have invented a great product. They are also looking for women
under 30 who, on their own, have invented a product that made at least a million dollars. Lastly they are looking
for inventions that were created as a way of dealing with a tragedy and as a method of preventing any further loss
by other families. Please contact Gina Kim at gkim@kingworld if you are or know of such an inventor.
August 3-4, 2001 - 6'h Annual Independent Inventor's Conference. Celebrating National Inventors Month. Sponsored
by the US Patent and Trademark Office. www.uspto.gov/go/iic200 1.
California TV Station Looking For You!
PBS Affiliate KIXE - Channel 9 in Redding California is looking for inventors in Northern California (why not Nevada
too?) that they can feature during National Inventors' Month August. They want people who can explain the process
of new product development- patenting, prototyping, and market research. If you have a story to tell and information
to share, write to kitty_conner@kixe.pbs.org.
Out of the Mouths of Babes
A wonderful addition to last month's meeting agenda was the appearance of Christopher Yocom and his mother. Yocom,
is the recipient of the Lemelson $100,000 scholarship award given to a high school student for a paten table, marketable
invention. While working on his idea, he was encouraged by a helpful neighbor, his mom, and the motivation of a
good grade in Science class. Experienced inventors in the audience had to smile as he spoke of his patent search
and the difficulties involved in writing and describing his invention. All in the audience marveled at this student
who's very inexperience seemed to help him through the process. There were very few preconceived notions of difficulty
or possibilities. Not one person told him he could be putting his time to better use. He just did it. And maybe
we should too.

Make Plans to Attend the Toy and Game Inventor's Forum
(An open letter from the folks at TGIF)
Dear Inventors:
We personally would like to invite all to come to this years' TGIF (Toy and Game Inventor's Forum) again being
held in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 6-8 2001 at Bally Hotel. This not-for profit program was made just for you!
We will again have all the key companies and personnel from toy, entertainment, retail and many other industries
represented. In addition, we will have a special "industry executives only" round table at the end of
the forum and we invite "those in the know" to participate! All we are missing is YOU.
The trade show at TGIF is very popular. The tradeshow spotlights service companies who wish to sell their service
or enhance their presence in the toy industry. We typically have lines of people waiting in front of the booths
for their turn to meet important and often difficult to find industry folks. There are typically manufacturers,
representatives from testing facilities, engineering companies, advertising agencies, as well as logistic and distribution
companies present. Pass the word about having a booth at TGIF to companies you feel would benefit from this kind
of exposure and presence.
You also won't want to miss the many programs that are provided which include presentations from McDonalds "Happy
Meal" program to NPD group discussing what is hot, not, and what the future holds. Hear the buyers take on
the Q & A panel and participate in roundtables. TGIF is a synergistic program that has fueled intra industry
action, cooperation and strategic alliances.
And don't miss the special parties and events that TGIG is famous for. We plan to outdo the previous year's racing
event and rodeo. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us. I look forward to seeing you. For more information
of TGIF or to sign up for the conference check out: www.toysngames.com. You can also reach us at 1-888-683-TGIF.
NIA IS Looking for a Few Good Men
Opportunity for Inventors to Show Their Products at the State Fair Booth
The NIA will be present and accounted for this year at the Nevada State Fair. State Fair Committee Chairman, George
Kent will pull together a group of volunteers to man our booth. Bill Young, Floyd Krebs, Len Schweitzer, Toni Patti
and Bud Clark have volunteered to help with this project. If you have enthusiasm to share about your experiences
as an independent inventor please call George Kent, 329-8863 and help out. This is a great opportunity to present
your invention to the public, receive feedback and pass out flyers or business cards. We are encouraging all members
to put in 2 to 4 hours at the booth. Spread the word about NIA as a resource for independent inventors, meet interesting
people and perhaps valuable contacts. This is a win - win opportunity for the community, our Association and yourself.
Anyone who works at the Fair is offered a free NIA shirt.
