NIA Members pack the room, crawl about on floor, act like kids!
NIA Vice President, Alex Prokop spoke to an interested and enthusiastic audience at the October Meeting.
In an effort to educate, while bringing out the sense of wonder and playfulness lurking in the member's hearts,
Prokop spoke about the properties of magnetism. Amazingly powerful tiny magnets were passed hand to hand. Bar magnet
dared you to just try and pull them apart. The packed house energetically sent round magnets rolling down tubes.
As the magnets seemed to slow down to a "float" the years gently lifted off the memberships shoulders
and the fun of science and inventing was rediscovered. Ideas bounced around the room and in members minds. What
new invention did this exercise spark? Let us know at the December Meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Patents
Answered by Randy Sloan NIA President
Q. What do the terms "patent pending" and "patent applied for" mean?
A. They are used by a manufacturer or seller of an article to inform the public that an application for patent
on that article is on file in the Patent and Trademark Office. The law imposes a fine on those who use these terms
falsely to deceive the public.
Q. Is there any danger that the Patent and Trademark Office will give others information contained in my application
while it is pending?
A. No. All patent applications are maintained in the strictest confidence until the patent is issued. After the
patent is issued, however, the Office file containing the application and all correspondence leading up to issuance
of the patent IS made available in the Files Information Unit for inspection by anyone and copies of these files
may be purchased from the Office.

2001 Officers submitted by Randy Sloan
On October 28, 2000 at 12 noon a board of directors meeting was held in room 101 of Washoe Medical Center.
The directors nominated the following members to be voted in at the December meeting as Officers of the NIA for
the calendar year 2001.
* President: Alex Prokop
* Vice-President: Bill Torch
* Secretary: Vince Chemist
* Treasurer: Randy Sloan
* Program Chairperson:
John Martinson and/or
Carol Anderson
* Sergeant at Arms: Floyd Krebs
Nominations for officers are still open and will be accepted until the election at the December Meeting.
The board discussed and agreed that we would once again participate in the State Fair.
The board discussed raising the dues annually to $50.00 for the calendar year 2001.
Lifetime membership would be raised to $500. This item will be voted Upon by membership at the December meeting.
Member Profile: Carol Anderson
At the next NIA meeting take the opportunity to meet Carol Anderson. Carol was recently profiled in the
November 11, Reno Gazette Journal. Carol, a gifted and successful artist, designed last year's Carson City Silver
Millennium Coin and is commissioned to create a limited edition rendering of the Nevada State Legislative building.
Carol has created murals for the Western Nevada Community College as well as the new artist's lofts in the renovated
Riverside Hotel Casino. An excerpt for the RGJ article is of particular interest to our NIA members.
One of her (Carol) most intriguing affiliations is membership in the Nevada Inventor's Society. Tossing around
ideas with people well-known for thinking out of the box, she has been inspired to think along new lines in art
such as the use of magnets or art that moves, chemicals, and even sound.
"Let's just say that I've never been disappointed in even one of those meetings....I feel strongly that artists
are people who are a lot more apt to take a risk of failure, and then if it doesn't work out, learn from that mistake.
I'm amazed to see the things I've created. It's a wonderful thing to really know that my potential is infinite.
